minecraft yellowstone

hey bloggers brock here
in writing we have been using minecraft education edition for our yellowstone it was very fun we also learned a lot of stuff i hope you can have interest in our learning  (if i did any spelling wrong comment down below)
Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming | Travel Channel

This had a      detrimental effect on the land as the elk were taking over, eating the shrubs and damaging the environment. The National Park was becoming barren

In 1995, wolves were reintroduced       into the park where they began a trophic cascade. This is where other species benefit from their presence and the environment flourishes and regenerates. Because of the wolves in the park, the elk weren’t       grazing by the rivers as they could be easily hunted. Some of them were killed for food by the wolves and the elk population slowed        . With less elk, the trees could regenerate, and in some places their growth quintupled        . More trees meant more migratory birds arrived,          , as well as song birds, and more trees meant more beavers and otters. Bears returned to the area as there were berries and carrion to eat. The carrion that the wolves left behind was attracting         rodents and hawks.  before

The reintroduction of wolves also affected           the course of the rivers as the banks became more stable        and so they meandered        less. Having wolves back in the park had a positive            impact on Yellowstone National Park

maths

Kia ora bloggers,

For numeracy today, we have started to learn about angles.

We learnt about 3 different angles today - acute (less than 90°), right angle (90°), and obtuse (larger than 90° but smaller than 180°).  We also learnt how to use a protractor to measure angles.  We know that we need to measure an angle from a vertice (a corner where two straight lines meet).

For our create task, we had to measure three different angles on the first letter of our name - can you  figure out if they are acute, right angle or obtuse?

Show not tell

Kia ora bloggers,
This week for literacy we have been learning about inferencing and show not tell.  When we read something, we automatically start making inferences, so it is important when we write that we give clues in our writing that allow people to make inferences.  We want to show them - not tell them.
For example:  Paul was frustrated when he got to the bus stop and realised he had just missed the bus.  But instead I could write “Running as fast as he could, Paul turned the corner only to see the back of the bus as it pulled away.  Throwing his bag down on the ground and sighing out loud, Paul realised that he had no choice, but to sit and wait for the next bus to arrive - 20 minutes from now”  You can infer from me saying ‘throwing his bag down and sighing out loud’ that he is frustrated.

Maths

Hi Bloggers,

For numeracy this week, we have been learning about grid references and we have been working on 4 and 6 digit grid references.

We learnt that we read across the bottom of the grid first (Eastlings) and then up the side second (Northlings).

Our task today was to look at an aerial map of our school, write down the 6 digit grid references for the letters that our teacher had put on it, and then go in hunt of those points.  At each point there was 1 or 2 letters.  Once we had them all, we had to come back into the hub and unscramble the letters to figure out what it spelt.  The secret sentence was ‘Happy Birthday Zoe’.

I really enjoyed the task.  Have you ever had to use grid references before in real life?  What was it for?

See you next time,

maths

Kia ora Bloggers,

For Numeracy this week we have been looking at compass directions.  We have worked on reading maps using the 8 main directions - North, South, East, West, North-East, South-East, North-West and South-West and then we moved onto using Beebots and our knowledge of compass directions to get a Beebot through the grid to various locations.
We had to programme the Beebot with our own algorithm, using forwards, backwards, turn right, turn left and N, S, E, W.  It was important that we regularly tested our algorithm to check we didn’t need to de-bug (find a problem and fix it).

Here is an example of my algorithm:

Have you ever written an algorithm for something?  Have you ever had to use a compass for something?

LOCKDOWN BAKING

Friday 8th May - Lockdown Baking with Brock

Hey bloggers thought today we needed to get some baking done. Mum, Peyton and I decided what we wanted to make. So we decided on Anzac Biscuits, Caramel Biscuits and Banana Cake.

The Anzac biscuit recipe is my Poppa´s, the caramel biscuit recipe is my Great Nana´s and the Banana cake recipe comes from Glamour Cake Cafe in Lyttelton. Peyton and I had so much fun measuring all the ingredients and then mixing everything together. Mum put the oven trays in the oven as it was way to hot for us to touch.

COVID - 19 BLOG

COVID - 19 By Brock

2020 where do we start. March 26th we went into full level 4 lockdown in New Zealand. That meant we had to stay home from school, the parks and only 1 person in the family could go to the supermarket. We also had to stay in the house where we lived and no one could come or stay apart from those living there.  That was my mum, dad, my sister Peyton and me. My older brother kadin stayed with his girlfriend. And only those that were essential workers such as nurses, doctors, cleaners and supermarket staff were allowed to go to work.

The facts so far about Covid - 19 is there are a total of 1474 cases, 348 are probable so may or may not have the virus, 1126 that have tested positive. 1229 have since recovered with 19 people dying from the virus that have underlying other medical issues.

In Canterbury 162 have tested positive for Covid - 19, 111 people have since recovered with just 41 people still having it. In christchurch we have had 3 places where 10 or more people have Covid- 19 which is called a cluster. They are Rosewood Rest home with 54 cases, George Manning Rest Home with 20 cases and a unknown workplace with 10 cases.

The honerable Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Minister of Health Ashley Bloomfield have been doing daily updates on the TV with how New Zealand is doing.

On Tuesday 28th April 2020 we moved to level 3 lockdown where over 400,00 people returned to work and lots of businesses were able to open such as McDonalds and Burger King but we havent had any yet as there are very long lines of people wanting takeaways.

Level 3 also means keeping our bubbles stillk small so unless your parents are essential workers you still cant go to school yet. So we still have mum at home but dad has returned to work as a Saw Doctor for Thode Knife & Saw. My other brother Kadin comes home each night for a shower after work . Im excited once level 2 comes in so i can see my other older brother Travis and his girlfriend Greer and see Kadinś girlfriend Emma.
